Despite Houthi rocket attacks, logistical obstacles, and lengthier-than-normal travel times, a cohort of 20 university students has successfully arrived in Israel. These new AVI Common Ground Ambassadors, both Jewish and non-Jewish, represent 13 campuses across Canada. They reached Jerusalem just in time for Shabbat and the third night of Chanukah.
The students will explore strategic destinations, learn about Israel’s diversity and democracy, and engage with high-profile experts, journalists, and politicians. Their itinerary includes visits to sites affected by the Oct. 7th attacks, equipping them better to convey Israel’s story upon their return to campus.
In the coming days, the students will tour the Christian and Jewish Quarters of the Holy City, meet with geopolitical experts, and understand the significance of the Kotel and other historical sites. They will also interact with diverse residents of Jerusalem, hearing their personal stories.

The itinerary includes meetings with Arab-Israeli journalists and human rights advocates who work to advance peace and partnership, offering insights into the region’s complex politics. The group will hear from high-profile experts affiliated with organizations such as Sharaka, visit Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and engage with Members of Knesset.
Students will also participate in AVI workshops and educational programs designed to help them bring their newfound knowledge back to campus. These sessions focus on coalition-building, countering antisemitic propaganda, telling Israel’s story, and understanding Jewish indigeneity to the Land of Israel.
Many of these students are already actively combating antisemitism, and this program aims to expand their resources and strengthen their advocacy for Israel on campus.
Updates on their journey can be followed on AVI’s Instagram account.
