Why Palestinians In Gaza Keep Joining Hamas

A Symptom Of A Broken System

SHARE

The horrifying events of October 7th, when Hamas launched an unprecedented and brutal attack on Israel, killing close to 1200 people and taking 251 hostages, revealed the true nature of the terrorist organization. This heinous act, which triggered a full-scale war, left no doubt about Hamas’s willingness to sacrifice not only Israeli lives but also the lives of Palestinians in Gaza to pursue its extremist agenda. Yet, even amid the devastation wrought by the ensuing conflict, Hamas continues to recruit thousands of new fighters, further entrenching its grip on Gaza and perpetuating the cycle of violence.

Reports indicate that Hamas has recruited an additional 12,000 to 23,000 militants since the start of the war, bringing its fighting force to over 20,000. This increase is not a sign of ideological support but a reflection of the oppressive environment Hamas has cultivated. The group’s control over Gaza’s political, social, and economic systems ensures that many Palestinians have no choice but to comply. For some, joining Hamas offers financial stability in a region ravaged by poverty and unemployment; for others, it is the only way to survive under a regime that tolerates no dissent.

Hamas exploits despair, portraying itself as the defender of Palestinians against Israel while orchestrating their suffering. The destruction in Gaza is not merely a consequence of Israeli military operations but a result of Hamas’s use of civilian areas as shields for its terror infrastructure. Schools, hospitals, and residential buildings are used to launch rockets and store weapons, making them targets and turning Palestinian civilians into pawns in itsidiological war against Israel.

The aftermath of October 7th exposed the depth of Hamas’s brutality, not only toward Israelis but also toward its own people. Hamas leadership prioritizes its war effort over the welfare of Gazans, diverting resources meant for humanitarian aid into weapons and tunnels used for terrorism. Despite facing devastating losses in the conflict, Hamas manipulates the destruction to fuel its propaganda, recruiting more fighters under the pretense of resistance.

Hamas’s indoctrination begins at a young age. In Hamas-run schools, children are taught to glorify martyrdom and hate Israel. Dissent is met with severe consequences, including imprisonment, torture, or execution. This coercive environment leaves many Gazans trapped, with no alternative but to submit to Hamas’s rule.

Israel’s military response to the October 7th massacre is both necessary and justified. Hamas cannot be allowed to continue its reign of terror. Yet, the international community’s failure to hold Hamas accountable enables the group to maintain its narrative of victimhood, exploiting global sympathy for the Palestinian cause to further its own agenda.

Breaking Hamas’s stranglehold on Gaza requires dismantling its infrastructure, cutting off its funding, and exposing its lies. The people of Gaza deserve better than to be used as human shields by a regime that thrives on their despair. The international community must focus on empowering Palestinians to build a future free from terror, oppression, and the cyclical violence Hamas perpetuates.

The war that began on October 7th is a stark reminder that Hamas’s actions are not about defending Palestinians—they are about advancing an ideology of destruction. Until Hamas’s control is broken, the people of Gaza will remain hostages to its tyranny, and the region will continue to suffer the consequences.
