For the first time since the Iron Swords War began, a delegation of 800 French teenagers traveled to Israel last week to participate in a unique initiative blending volunteerism with cultural immersion. The program, a joint effort by the Jewish Agency’s Israel Experience initiative and Mosaic United’s Shalom Corps, focused on strengthening ties with Israel and supporting communities affected by recent conflicts.

Typically centered on introducing European Jewish youth to Israel’s educational and cultural institutions, the initiative shifted its focus this year to address the pressing needs brought about by the war that Hamas launched on October 7, 2023.

“This was an incredible combination of social action and learning about Israel,” said Maria Youssim, director of Mosaic United’s Shalom Corps division. “It wasn’t just a visit; it was a statement about an unbreakable connection. The initiative demonstrated the power of collaboration between Israel and Diaspora Jews, proving that even in difficult times, solidarity can light the way.”

The teenagers, divided into groups, engaged in various volunteer projects throughout their week in Israel. They packed food for underserved populations, assisted non-governmental organizations like Magen David Adom and Yad Sarah, supported logistical efforts at Israel Defense Forces bases, and aided agricultural communities deeply affected by the war.

Beyond their volunteer work, the participants delved into discussions about Israeli society and the challenges faced by Jews worldwide, particularly the alarming rise of antisemitism in France.

“Before we left, our families were concerned because of the situation, but once we got here, we saw how important it was,” said Noa and Eva, two friends who participated together. “Not only did we volunteer, but we also strengthened our connection to Israel and Israeli society.”

Eliahu, a participant from Paris, echoed this sentiment. “I came here because I felt it was the right time to support Israel. I was proud to be here and help people living under such difficult circumstances.”

Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, praised the initiative as a powerful response to global antisemitism.

“The most effective way to address rampant antisemitism is by strengthening Jewish identity and deepening the connection with the State of Israel,” Chikli said. “I am proud of the engaged and committed youth, who show care, action, and resilience. They prove that as waves of antisemitism rise worldwide, so does the shared destiny of the Jewish people.”

The program underscored the enduring bonds between Israel and Diaspora Jewry, demonstrating how shared efforts can foster resilience and hope during challenging times.
