As the Federal Liberal Party prepares to chart a new course, Karina Gould has emerged as a compelling candidate for leadership. Until recently the government’s House Leader, Gould has also served as Minister of International Development and Minister of Democratic Institutions, shaping her as a thoughtful and experienced policymaker. Her blend of political expertise, multicultural heritage, and forward-thinking vision makes her a standout contender.

Born and raised in Burlington, Ontario, Gould’s story is deeply shaped by her family’s remarkable history. Jewish on her father’s side, her paternal grandparents were Holocaust survivors from Czechoslovakia. Her grandfather endured deportation to Theresienstadt, Dachau, and Auschwitz, while her grandmother was separated from him during the war. Despite these hardships, they were reunited after the Holocaust and eventually resettled in Canada, where they built a new life.

“My family was accepted and welcomed into Canada after a difficult experience,” Gould has said. “Canadian values of tolerance and diversity were not just important for my family but for others. Canada provided the opportunity to grow and to thrive.”

Her father met her German mother while both were volunteering at Kibbutz Naot in Israel. The kibbutz, known for its iconic Naot sandals, represents not only the origins of Gould’s family but also her connection to Israel, a place she has visited multiple times. During a Birthright trip, Gould extended her stay to explore the country further, describing it as “a beautiful country” with “difficult challenges.”

Though she does not actively practice Judaism, Gould maintains her connection to her heritage by celebrating Hanukkah, Purim, and Yom Kippur. Her Jewish roots and family history have profoundly influenced her political values, fostering a commitment to inclusion, equity, and collective responsibility.

Her time in cabinet has demonstrated her ability to lead in diverse and challenging roles. As Minister of Democratic Institutions, Gould became the youngest female cabinet minister in Canadian history, working to protect electoral integrity and ensure transparency in governance. Later, as Minister of International Development, she championed global initiatives to improve education, health, and economic opportunities for marginalized communities worldwide.

During her tenure as House Leader, Gould navigated the complexities of parliamentary procedure and built consensus in a highly polarized environment. She was also front and centre during the 2019 visit of then-Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, where she emphasized the strong ties between Canada and Israel. She noted that since the 1997 Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, trade between the two nations has tripled to $1.9 billion. Additionally, she praised the Canada-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation, which has funded nearly 60 collaborative projects over the past 12 years. “Ties between Canada and Israel are long, deep, and mutually beneficial,” she remarked.

If elected as leader of the Federal Liberals, Gould would make history as the first Jewish woman to lead a major political party in Canada. Her candidacy signals a commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and resilience that resonate deeply with Canadians.

Gould’s story, shaped by her family’s survival, resilience, and contributions to Canada, is a testament to the opportunities this country provides. Her leadership vision, informed by her heritage and extensive political experience, offers a fresh and thoughtful approach to addressing Canada’s challenges in an interconnected world.

At this pivotal moment, Karina Gould’s unique blend of expertise, heritage, and vision positions her as a transformative leader for the Liberal Party and the nation. While some initially considered her to be something of a long shot, her compelling story, extensive political experience, and commitment to core Canadian values have made her a formidable contender, capable of charting a bold and inclusive course for Canada’s future.
