The Embassy of Israel in the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with the Espacio Anna Frank Foundation, hosted a special screening of the film One Life to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust. The annual observance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, takes place on January 27, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of this historic event.

Israel’s Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Raslan Abu Rukun, delivered a speech honoring the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust and acknowledging the suffering endured by many under the Nazi regime. He stressed the importance of remembrance, stating, “This day is not only about remembering the past, but also about shaping the future. We must learn from history, promote tolerance, and uphold the values of justice, equity, and human dignity. These principles are the foundation of peace and coexistence in our world.”

Karen Koenig, representing the Espacio Anna Frank Foundation, introduced In Memoriam 2025, an initiative designed to raise awareness of the dangers of discrimination, hatred, and racism. “This year, we want to honor those who, through their courage, brought light in a time of darkness. The Righteous Among the Nations teach us that every person can make a difference,” Koenig stated.

As part of the commemoration, the film One Life—which tells the true story of British stockbroker Nicholas Winton, who helped rescue over 600 children from Czechoslovakia before World War II—will be shown for free at Caribbean Cinemas in Sambil. Screenings will take place on January 30 and 31 at 7:00 p.m. and on February 1 and 2 at 5:00 p.m.

The event reinforced the importance of Holocaust remembrance and the ongoing need to educate future generations about the consequences of intolerance and hate.
