Pro-Israel advocates in Canada are calling for urgent reform in the national media, alleging that the CBC—the country’s flagship, publicly funded broadcaster—has repeatedly engaged in unfair double standards and delegitimization of Israel. In a recent news release, the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has detailed a series of disturbing practices that they say tarnish the CBC’s mandate to reflect Canada’s multicultural and multiracial society.
CIJA’s statement contends that while it is reasonable to hold Israel to the same rigorous standard as any liberal democracy, the CBC’s coverage has crossed a line. The organization highlights several examples of bias, including instances where CBC employees have used their personal social media platforms to express anti-Israel sentiments while maintaining a façade of journalistic neutrality in their official reporting. This, according to CIJA, violates the CBC’s own conflict of interest standards.
Moreover, CIJA points to the CBC’s repeated decision to give airtime to a Gaza-based “journalist” notorious for anti-Israel tirades—a figure with undisclosed links to Hamas and the Iranian regime’s propaganda apparatus. Such actions, CIJA argues, effectively turn the CBC into a conduit for extremist views and undermine public trust in one of Canada’s most respected media institutions.
The release also criticizes the CBC for allowing journalists who have publicly endorsed anti-Israel petitions to cover news related to Israel and the Middle East. The result, CIJA asserts, is a pattern of distorted and biased reporting that not only corrodes the trust of Canadians but also misrepresents the realities on the ground in a region already fraught with tension.
In response to these concerns, CIJA has joined forces with HonestReporting Canada to call on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to intervene. They are demanding the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to thoroughly investigate the CBC’s practices and hold the broadcaster accountable. Until this investigation is completed, CIJA insists that all CBC journalists who have demonstrated anti-Israel bias should be immediately reassigned from reporting on news related to Israel and the Middle East.
This call for accountability comes at a critical time. With global narratives increasingly influenced by polarizing and often one-sided media portrayals, many pro-Israel advocates warn that the CBC’s current course not only distorts public perception but also contributes to rising levels of hatred and intolerance across Canada.
Pro-Israel groups are urging Canadians to stand together in demanding real change. They insist that a fair, balanced, and objective media is essential to ensure that Israel—like any other liberal democracy—is treated with the respect and scrutiny it deserves.
To join the movement, supporters are encouraged to send a message to the President of the CBC, reinforcing the demand for an impartial and trustworthy public broadcaster.
