In a landmark event, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) facilitated a pre-budget consultation with the Government of Manitoba, marking the first instance where the Jewish community has been directly involved in shaping the province’s fiscal policies. The roundtable featured key government figures, including Finance Minister Adrien Sala, Minister of Innovation and New Technology Mike Moroz, and Tuxedo MLA Carla Compton.
Key Priorities Addressed
Collaborating closely with the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, CIJA outlined four critical areas for government action:
- Social Services, Seniors & Mental Health: Emphasizing the need for robust support systems to enhance the well-being of all Manitobans.
- Safety & Security Infrastructure: Advocating for measures to protect community institutions and public spaces.
- Education & Jewish Life: Highlighting the importance of educational initiatives that promote cultural understanding and diversity.
- Antisemitism, Social Impact & the Medical Sector: Addressing the rise in antisemitic incidents and their broader societal implications.
A Call Beyond Financial Support
Since October 7, there has been a concerning surge in antisemitic activities, with attacks targeting Jewish individuals and institutions across Manitoba and Canada. Alarmingly, some incidents have occurred within establishments founded by Jewish philanthropists who have significantly contributed to Manitoba’s social fabric.
CIJA’s message to the government was unequivocal: combating hate requires more than just funding. A steadfast commitment is needed to stand against discrimination and safeguard those at risk. The organization urged the Manitoba government to demonstrate unwavering support for all minority communities, emphasizing that inaction could undermine the province’s core values of diversity and inclusion.
A Partnership for Manitoba’s Future
The Jewish community’s engagement in this consultation underscores a commitment not only to voice concerns but also to collaborate actively in fostering a province characterized by security, diversity, and opportunity for all residents.
Government officials responded with thoughtful engagement, acknowledging the importance of the issues raised. CIJA has pledged to continue its advocacy efforts, ensuring that these discussions translate into tangible outcomes in Manitoba’s budget and policies affecting Jewish life.
