On February 23, 2025, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) joined the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and hundreds of Manitobans at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. The event underscored the unwavering support of Canada’s Jewish community for the Ukrainian people and highlighted the shared values of freedom and democracy between the two communities.

Gustavo Zentner, CIJA’s Vice President for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the resilience and courage of Ukrainians defending their homeland. “Canada’s Jewish community stands firmly with the people of Ukraine and all Ukrainian Canadians,” Zentner stated. “We continue to recognize the resilience, courage, and sacrifice of Ukrainians fighting for their independent homeland.”

The event featured a diverse group of official delegates, including Members of Parliament James Bezan and Ben Carr, Manitoba’s Minister of Labour and Immigration Uzoma Asagwara, and Winnipeg City Councillor Markus Chambers. Their presence signified a unified front in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and the broader fight against oppression.

This gathering comes at a time when global tensions are high, and the forces of oppression are spreading throughout Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of the world. The collaboration between CIJA and UCC highlights the importance of communities coming together to support democratic nations that share values of freedom, peace, and prosperity for all.

In January 2024, CIJA expanded its presence by opening an office in Winnipeg to serve Manitoba and Saskatchewan, responding to concerns about rising antisemitism in the region. Led by Gustavo Zentner, the office aims to engage with local communities and build bridges to address issues of mutual concern. “For me, it’s about attentive listening for deep understanding and building bridges,” Zentner expressed upon assuming his role. citeturn0search0

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its fourth year, CIJA and the broader Canadian community reaffirm their steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and the pursuit of peace. The event at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights serves as a poignant reminder of the shared struggles and the enduring commitment to stand against aggression and uphold democratic values.
