American University Cancels Controversial SJP Event Amid Antisemitism Concerns

University responds to planned "Smash Zionism" workshop, citing safety and community values.

American University (AU) has canceled a contentious event organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) titled “Debunking Zionist Lies Workshop,” which was scheduled to take place on campus. The event’s promotional materials, featuring a masked individual wielding a slingshot and the provocative call to “Smash Zionism,” sparked significant concern among Jewish students and faculty, who viewed it as a direct attack on their identity and safety.

Zionism, the movement advocating for Jewish self-determination in their ancestral homeland, is a fundamental aspect of Jewish identity. The workshop’s description invited participants to “discuss the origins of the Zionist project and then begin to dismantle the lies & propaganda that seek to normalize its existence,” effectively challenging Israel’s right to exist—a stance many consider antisemitic, as recognized by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition.

In response to the outcry, AU’s administration released a statement emphasizing the university’s commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination. The statement noted that the event did not undergo the necessary safety assessment and that its content, which included imagery and language contributing to safety concerns, did not represent AU’s values and created discord within the community. The university is evaluating the content to determine potential conduct violations and the impact on SJP’s ongoing probation.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny regarding AU’s handling of antisemitism on campus. In January 2024, Jewish on Campus and the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law filed a Title VI complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. The complaint detailed numerous instances of harassment, threats, and vandalism targeting Jewish students, alleging that AU was aware of the hostile environment yet failed to take appropriate action. In some cases, the university allegedly harassed student whistleblowers who reported antisemitic incidents.

The university’s recent decision to cancel the SJP event may be viewed as a step toward addressing these concerns. However, the administration’s statement did not explicitly condemn the antisemitic nature of the event, focusing instead on procedural oversights and safety assessments. This has led to questions about AU’s commitment to confronting antisemitism directly and fostering a truly inclusive environment for all students.

As AU continues to navigate these complex issues, the broader campus community and external observers will be monitoring how the university balances free speech with the need to protect students from hate speech and discrimination. The outcome of the Title VI investigation and AU’s future actions will likely have significant implications for how institutions nationwide address similar challenges.
