In the wake of the October 7 attacks by Hezbollah and Hamas, which displaced approximately 90,000 families within Israel, the University of Haifa launched the “Home Within the Heart” program. This initiative aims to address the unique needs of displaced families by redefining the concept of home and providing essential support during this challenging period.
The program is led by clinical psychologists Dr. Yael Mayer and Dr. Yael Enav, who have extensive experience working with displaced families from the Gaza Envelope and northern border regions. Their expertise has been instrumental in developing workshops designed to help displaced children and their parents cope with trauma and build resilience.
Guided by the principle that family serves as the primary protective factor for well-being, “Home Within the Heart” focuses on strengthening family bonds to preserve the sense of home, even amidst displacement and trauma. The program offers workshops across the country, providing displaced families with tools to navigate their new realities and foster resilience.
In recognition of their outstanding initiatives during the Swords of Iron War, Dr. Mayer and Dr. Enav were honored with the Yaffe London-Yari Award. Their collaborative work with Professor James Gross of Stanford University has been pivotal in supporting families displaced by the recent conflict.
The “Home Within the Heart” program aligns with the University of Haifa’s broader mission to revitalize Israel, particularly the northern regions, as the ceasefire takes effect. The university has launched its most ambitious campaign to date, supporting communities as they return, rebuild, and envision a thriving future in areas heavily destabilized by the conflict.
For those interested in learning more about the program and its impact, Dr. Mayer and Dr. Enav will be sharing their experiences in an upcoming discussion hosted by the American Friends of University of Haifa. This event offers an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities in supporting displaced families and forging a better future for those affected by the recent hostilities.
The “Home Within the Heart” program exemplifies the University of Haifa’s commitment to community resilience and support during times of crisis, providing displaced families with the resources and support needed to rebuild their lives and maintain their sense of home.
