In a significant development, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have arrested 19-year-old Winnipeg resident Nevin Thunder Young on multiple terrorism-related charges. This arrest follows an earlier incident in January where Young was charged with 26 counts of mischief under $5,000 after antisemitic graffiti was found in the Charleswood neighborhood.
The RCMP’s Federal Policing National Security Enforcement Section (NSES), Northwest Region, initiated an investigation in February 2025 after receiving a referral from the Winnipeg Police Service. On March 17, 2025, Young was arrested and charged with:
- Facilitating terrorist activity, contrary to section 83.19(1) of the Criminal Code;
- Participation in activity of a terrorist group, contrary to section 83.18(1) of the Criminal Code;
- Commission of an offence for a terrorist group, contrary to section 83.2 of the Criminal Code (two counts). citeturn0search2
Young is currently in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre and is scheduled to appear at the Winnipeg Provincial Court on March 18, 2025.
This recent arrest comes after Young’s previous charges in January 2025, when he was accused of defacing walls and fences with antisemitic graffiti in the Charleswood neighborhood between September 28 and December 31, 2024. The graffiti included hate symbols such as swastikas.
The RCMP has acknowledged the support of the Winnipeg Police Service in this investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the nature of the terrorist activities Young is alleged to have facilitated or participated in. The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
The community remains vigilant as law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to ensure public safety and address any threats posed by extremist activities.
