A recent investigation by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has uncovered a coordinated effort by over 30 Wikipedia editors to infuse antisemitic narratives and anti-Israel biases into the platform’s articles. The report, published on March 18, 2025, details how these editors collaborated to insert misleading information and promote anti-Israel perspectives, particularly concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The ADL’s Center for Tech and Society found that these editors were more than twice as active as typical Wikipedia contributors and communicated with each other 18 times more frequently than average. Their coordinated actions included removing references to antisemitism, downplaying Hamas violence, and reframing entries about Zionism and significant events to portray Israel negatively.
In response to these findings, the ADL has called for search engines to deprioritize biased Wikipedia pages and urged the platform to involve subject matter experts in its editorial processes to address systemic biases and harassment.
Wikipedia has acknowledged the ADL’s report and is conducting a detailed analysis. However, the platform expressed concerns about the report’s conclusions, stating they found them troubling and unsupported by data.
This revelation underscores the challenges Wikipedia faces in maintaining neutrality and accuracy, particularly on contentious topics like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The platform’s reliance on volunteer editors makes it susceptible to coordinated campaigns that can skew content and misinform readers.
The ADL’s report serves as a call to action for Wikipedia to bolster its editorial oversight and ensure that content remains unbiased and informative for its global audience.
