In a disturbing development that threatens to inflame antisemitic sentiments, the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba (CPAM), in collaboration with Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), recently hosted the “Anti-Zionist Refusenik Speaking Tour.” This tour featured Israeli individuals, notably Tal Mitnick and Einat Gerlitz, who refused mandatory military service—a legal obligation in Israel—citing opposition to what they describe as the “occupation and oppression” of Palestinians.
While the right to conscientious objection is a recognized principle, the narratives presented during this tour have raised significant concerns. The speakers characterized Israel’s defensive measures as “apartheid and genocide,” inflammatory terms that not only misrepresent the complex realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but also echo classic antisemitic tropes aimed at delegitimizing the Jewish state.
Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), a co-organizer of the tour, has a documented history of anti-Zionist activities. The organization has been at the forefront of campaigns promoting Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, a movement widely criticized for its antisemitic underpinnings and its goal of isolating Israel economically and culturally.
The participation of CPAM and IJV in facilitating a platform that disseminates narratives aligning with antisemitic ideologies is deeply troubling. Such actions contribute to the normalization of antisemitism under the guise of political activism, posing a direct threat to Jewish communities in Canada and undermining efforts toward genuine peace and understanding.
It is imperative for Canadian society to recognize and challenge these insidious forms of antisemitism masquerading as legitimate criticism. While open dialogue and diverse perspectives are essential in a democratic society, they must not serve as a cover for hate speech or the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. Distinguishing between valid criticism of government policies and rhetoric that seeks to delegitimize an entire nation or people is crucial.
As incidents of antisemitism continue to rise globally, vigilance against all forms of hate speech is more important than ever. Communities and organizations must be held accountable for the narratives they promote and the potential harm these narratives can inflict on marginalized groups. Only through such accountability can we hope to foster a society that truly values equity, justice, and mutual respect.
