Pai, a picturesque town in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province, renowned for its serene landscapes and vibrant tourist scene, is experiencing a notable decline in tourism. This downturn is attributed to escalating antisemitic sentiments following recent incidents involving Israeli visitors.
On February 2, 2025, four Israeli men—Daniel Gagaev, 24; Aviv Rom, 26; Or Emanoel Ashton, 25; and Dan Nisko, 25—were involved in a disturbance at Pai Hospital. They attempted to forcefully enter the emergency room where their friend was receiving treatment for motorcycle accident injuries, disrupting medical staff and other patients. The individuals were subsequently fined 3,000 baht each for causing a disturbance and deported from Thailand.
In response to this incident, a local restaurant displayed a sign stating Israeli tourists were not welcome, reflecting a broader sentiment growing among Pai’s residents and business owners. Social media platforms have amplified these feelings, with reports of inappropriate behavior by tourists causing anxiety among local entrepreneurs. One restaurant owner expressed fear due to the misconduct of certain visitors, highlighting the challenges faced by small business operators in maintaining a safe environment.
The impact of these events on Pai’s tourism industry is significant. In 2024, the town welcomed 221,776 foreign tourists, with Israelis comprising a substantial portion. The recent antisemitic sentiments, however, have led to a discernible decrease in tourist arrivals, affecting the local economy that heavily relies on tourism.
