The University of Guelph’s chapter of Students Supporting Israel (SSI) recently faced significant opposition after announcing an event featuring an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier scheduled for April 2. The event aimed to provide firsthand insights into the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

However, the announcement was met with immediate backlash from various groups. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) issued an “Action Alert,” expressing concerns over the soldier’s participation, particularly highlighting his involvement in Gaza.
In response to mounting pressure, including a surge of emails and advocacy efforts, the University decided to cancel the event. Advocacy group Show Up for Guelph announced the cancellation, attributing it to the collective efforts of concerned individuals and organizations.
This development has ignited a broader debate about academic freedom and the importance of open dialogue on university campuses. Proponents of the event argue that universities should be bastions of diverse perspectives, allowing students to engage directly with speakers from various backgrounds to foster understanding and critical thinking.
The cancellation raises concerns about the influence of external pressures on academic institutions and the potential stifling of discourse. Ensuring that universities remain platforms for free expression and the exchange of ideas is paramount in upholding the values of education and democracy.

I am so pleased this event has been canceled.
Enough that they are genocidal – now they want to brag about it on university campuses.
Today being a proud Zionist equates to being pro-genocide and having far right extremist views. And being in denial about it causes wide spread oppression and rise of fascism across the world. Judaism is not Zionism. Stop equating it! To Invite a soldier who killed numerous children and committed war crimes to speak to students — you must be out of your god damn mind!!!
I can’t believe we’re even talking about this in terms of academic freedom. When there is a consensus of respected international bodies telling us what’s been going on for decades is apartheid and what’s happening now is genocide, this isn’t a question of academic freedom, it’s a question of whether or not you have anything resembling a moral compass. If this was “U Guelph is proud to present a conversation with Ted Bundy” would we even be having this discussion? Because ironically, Ted Bundy has killed far fewer innocent people than many IDF soldiers have. Zionism is nothing short of a colonial disease, brought to fruition by a colonial power, encouraged by other colonial powers, giving land that was never theirs to give as a means of creating another colonial power now actively in the business of apartheid and genocide.
Lastly, the tags on this article are hilarious. “Anti-Israel bias”…okay that’s true, but guess what? Sometimes bias is the objectively correct position. Israel wants to continue to act as a rogue state without dissention or consequence, and in doing so are the primary creators of the anti-Israel bias we see. “Campus Antisemitism”…lol. Absolutely nobody with two brain cells left to rub together buys the notion that criticizing the actions of a far-right extremist government actively engaging in apartheid and genocide is just because they’re Jewish. How many of the activists on campuses all across North America and Europe speaking out against Israel’s murderous agenda are Jews themselves? Oh but those are just self-hating Jews, right? They don’t count. ANYBODY, Jewish or otherwise, who can still sit there with a straight face and support what Israel is doing has lost their moral compass completely.
