Jewish Students Abandoned By An Antisemitic System

A Jewish parent's harrowing account exposes how Canadian universities are failing to protect Jewish students from rampant antisemitism—forcing families to look to the US for safety and support.

A Jewish parent has come forward with a gut-wrenching account of the challenges faced by her child who is a promising graduate student accepted to universities in both Canada and the United States. Her testimony paints a damning picture of Canadian campuses, which she describes as being “infected by antisemitism,” particularly among professors, leaving Jewish students vulnerable and unprotected.

“I am posting this anonymously because it’s related to my child,” the parent writes. “My child has been accepted to a graduate school in Canada and a number in the USA. In Canada, she has faced horrific antisemitism on campus, mainly from all the professors. We will likely pursue legal action after she graduates.” Such words shock the conscience and force us to confront a disturbing truth: despite Canada’s proud multicultural ideals, its academic institutions are failing to shield Jewish students from hate.

While US schools are stepping up with extensive measures—appointing liaison officers on antisemitism, training incoming students, designating safe protest zones, and even limiting the duration of protests—the same cannot be said for Canadian universities. “Every school she applied to in the US has set out extensive measures to protect my child from antisemitism and taken active steps… In Canada, nothing like this exists,” the parent laments.

“If your child or a student was being harassed because of their color of skin, or their sexual orientation, would you still insist on dialogue or would you be demanding and protesting for change?”

This isn’t merely an isolated incident but part of an alarming surge in campus antisemitism across Canada. For many Jewish students, the daily academic environment is marred by hate: from discriminatory comments made by faculty to overt acts of harassment on campus grounds. The parent questions, “If your child or a student was being harassed because of their color of skin, or their sexual orientation, would you still insist on dialogue or would you be demanding and protesting for change?” This rhetorical question strikes at the heart of the issue—why should Jewish students be expected to endure hate and neglect when they deserve protection and support?

The stark reality is that when Canadian universities turn a blind eye to such prejudice, they not only fail in their duty of care but actively contribute to an environment where antisemitic ideologies can thrive. For this family, and many others like them, the decision is painfully clear: they are prepared to make financial sacrifices to ensure their children attend safe institutions—deciding unequivocally in favor of American campuses that prioritize anti-hate measures.

The situation raises urgent questions about the state of education and the ethical responsibility of academic institutions. How many more red flags must be ignored before real change is demanded? When antisemitism is allowed to fester within the hallowed halls of our universities, it is not just a failure of policy—it is a moral failing that leaves Jewish communities bearing the brunt of the hate.

This parent’s account is a clarion call to Canadian educators, administrators, and policymakers: the time for half-measures is over. To truly honor the values of diversity, inclusion, and respect, Canadian universities must institute comprehensive anti-hate policies and protective measures that ensure every student can pursue their education free from fear and discrimination. Until then, the question remains: can we continue to tolerate an academic system that sacrifices the safety and dignity of Jewish students on the altar of political correctness?
