Haaretz’s Baseless Smear: A Blood Libel Against Israel

A scathing rebuttal to an anonymous opinion piece that recycles medieval antisemitic tropes, misrepresenting the ethics and realities of the IDF's operations.

In an era when facts matter more than fearmongering, Haaretz’s recent anonymous opinion piece—a reckless, unfounded claim that “almost every IDF platoon keeps a human shield, a sub-army of Palestinian slaves”—crosses every line of responsible journalism. This isn’t a legitimate critique of military tactics; it’s an antisemitic blood libel that smears Israel’s defenders with the most dangerous, archaic tropes.

The claim that IDF units routinely employ human shields is not only factually baseless but a gross perversion of reality. Israel’s military is bound by a strict code of conduct, and while no military institution is free from isolated incidents under the strain of war, to allege that nearly every platoon engages in such practices is to ignore decades of documented professionalism and humanitarian conduct. Instead, Haaretz chooses to amplify a narrative that plays into longstanding anti-Israel stereotypes—stereotypes designed to demonize the state and its soldiers.

By giving a platform to such incendiary, anonymous assertions, Haaretz not only misleads its readers but actively contributes to a broader campaign of delegitimization. Rather than engaging in a balanced discussion about the challenges of urban warfare and the grim realities on the Gaza front, the piece recycles tired, repugnant myths that resemble medieval blood libels. These libels, historically used to incite hatred and violence against Jews, are entirely out of place in contemporary discourse—and their reappearance in a modern publication is as shocking as it is unacceptable.

Israel’s right to self-defense against terrorism and the brutal tactics of Hamas is non-negotiable. The IDF operates under intense scrutiny, adhering to international law and ethical military conduct in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. To dismiss decades of sacrifice and professional integrity with a single, unsubstantiated smear is to disrespect the soldiers who risk their lives every day for the safety of their citizens. Haaretz’s irresponsible commentary not only distorts the truth—it endangers the very fabric of informed, honest debate in our society.

It is high time that media outlets like Haaretz are held accountable for propagating dangerous narratives that rely on age-old antisemitic tropes rather than critical, fact-based analysis. When sensationalism replaces truth, even voices once considered credible are reduced to instruments of ideological warfare. The Jewish people and the state of Israel deserve better—a commitment to honest reporting that honors the history, respects the sacrifice of those who protect us and upholds the dignity of rational discourse over incendiary propaganda.
