Ottawa Hate Protester Unmasked: Mohamad Mehdi, Carlton University Student, Identified

The masked protestor, seen earlier in downtown Ottawa donning a Hamas bandana and spewing hateful slogans, has now been identified as Mohamad Mehdi, igniting renewed calls for decisive action against extremist behavior.

In a significant update to our earlier report, authorities have identified the masked protester in downtown Ottawa as Mohamad Mehdi, a student at Carlton University. The individual, previously seen wearing a Hamas bandana and chanting slogans such as “Jews, go back to Europe” and “Intifada revolution, there is only one solution,” has now come under even greater scrutiny for his extremist actions.

Eyewitnesses reported that during the protest, no fellow demonstrators confronted the individual; rather, some were seen protecting and even cheering him on as he deployed smoke grenades in the area. Ottawa police were present at the scene, though they did not intervene at the time to address this overt display of support for Hamas—a terrorist organization recognized by the Canadian government.

This latest revelation has added new dimensions to the controversy, underscoring a broader pattern of rising antisemitism in Canada. Just last December, a Montreal synagogue was targeted in a suspected arson attack, and a nearby Jewish office building was vandalized—incidents that prompted swift condemnation from officials, including former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In response to the surge in antisemitic incidents, the Canadian government has launched a National Forum on Combatting Antisemitism to coordinate efforts among various levels of government, law enforcement, and the Jewish community.

The identification of Mohamad Mehdi as the protester raises critical questions about the influences and ideologies driving such hate-fueled acts. As more information comes to light about his motivations and affiliations, community leaders are demanding accountability and a stronger response to prevent further extremist behavior. Many community members argue that if similar displays of hate were directed at symbols of other recognized hate groups, the reaction from both the public and authorities would be swift and severe.

This incident is a stark reminder of the persistent challenges Canada faces in confronting antisemitism and extremist conduct. The identification of Mehdi should catalyze decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, and to uphold the values of tolerance and respect that underpin our society.
