Hillel Ontario, a prominent organization supporting Jewish students across the province, is undertaking a thorough review of its incident reporting systems after receiving more than 100 violent threats through its website on March 22, 2025. These threats specifically targeted Jewish students at the University of Waterloo and the University of Guelph.
Jacqueline Dressler, director of advocacy at Hillel Ontario, detected the alarming influx of messages when she noticed her inbox was inundated with threatening submissions. Recognizing the severity, Hillel staff promptly alerted the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) and the Guelph Police Service.
By March 26, a 17-year-old male was arrested and charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in connection with the incident. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to public safety, though the investigation remains active.
Hillel Ontario is evaluating and enhancing its security measures to better protect students and prevent future occurrences in response to this incident. This event underscores a troubling trend, as recent data indicates a significant rise in hate-motivated crimes targeting the Jewish community both locally and nationally.
The organization continues to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of Jewish students on campus. Community leaders and advocacy groups have expressed deep concern over the surge in antisemitic incidents and are calling for increased vigilance and proactive measures to combat hate and promote inclusivity.
