UK Media Regulator Censures Islam Channel For Advocating Marital Rape And Violence Against Women

London-based broadcaster found in breach of broadcasting code for promoting harmful content

The UK’s media regulator, Ofcom, has censured Islam Channel, a London-based satellite television broadcaster, for multiple breaches of the broadcasting code, including advocating marital rape, condoning violence against women, and failing to maintain impartiality in its coverage of international affairs.

In a series of programs aired between 2008 and 2009, Islam Channel featured content that Ofcom determined was harmful and offensive. In one instance, a presenter stated that it was “not strange” and “not such a big problem” for a man to force his wife to have sex. Another program suggested that the most a husband could do was hit his wife with a stick the size of a pen “just to make her feel that you are not happy with her.” Additionally, women who wore perfume outside the home were described as “prostitutes.”

The Islam Channel’s “persistent lack of impartiality, spread of harmful rhetoric, and engagement in political advocacy appear to directly contravene the principles set out in the Broadcasting Code.”

Ofcom’s investigation was prompted by a report from the Quilliam Foundation, a counter-extremism think tank, which monitored the channel’s output over three months and published findings indicating that Islam Channel regularly promoted extremist views and regressive attitudes toward women.

In response to Ofcom’s ruling, Islam Channel announced plans to appeal, asserting that the regulator’s judgment was influenced by external pressures and that their remarks were taken out of context. The channel emphasized its commitment to journalistic obligations and expressed concerns about the influence of organizations like the Quilliam Foundation on governmental bodies.

This censure underscores ongoing concerns about the content broadcasted by media outlets and highlights the importance of regulatory oversight in maintaining broadcasting standards.
