Aurora Public Schools are conducting an investigation following the emergence of a photograph showing two individuals posing with a Nazi flag in the high school’s locker room. The image surfaced on Instagram and quickly spread across various social media platforms.
Superintendent Jody Phillips reported that the administration became aware of the photo late Thursday evening. The school promptly contacted local law enforcement to initiate a thorough investigation upon discovery. Authorities are currently identifying and interviewing those directly involved in the photo, as well as individuals responsible for capturing and disseminating the image.
In an official statement, Superintendent Phillips condemned the act:
“The Aurora Public Schools acknowledges this photo is extremely inappropriate and unacceptable. The photo depicts a symbol of hate and offensiveness that the Aurora Public Schools does not condone. It sheds a negative light on our school, school district, and community. This act, and the message it sends, is not tolerated in our school, and we will take all means necessary to address this issue.”
Phillips further emphasized that the students involved will face disciplinary actions per the school’s code of conduct and applicable state laws. She extended an apology on behalf of the school’s staff and students, acknowledging the harm caused by the incident. The district is committed to holding those responsible accountable and plans to enhance educational efforts focusing on acceptance, tolerance, and digital citizenship.
The investigation remains ongoing. School officials urge anyone with additional information regarding the photo or the associated social media accounts to contact the Aurora High School administration.
