Pro‑Palestinian Agitator Arrested At Toronto Jewish Community Centre Over Keffiyeh Refusal

Hamood Ahmed Al Wiali ignored repeated requests to remove his keffiyah, sparking fierce outrage from community leaders and prompting his arrest amid escalating tensions.

In a flagrant display of defiance and disrespect, pro‑Palestinian agitator Hamood Ahmed Al Wiali entered the Toronto Jewish Community Centre wearing a keffiyeh—a symbol that many view as emblematic of extremist rhetoric. Despite repeated requests from Centre management to remove the head covering or vacate the premises, Al Wiali persisted in arguing with staff, ultimately leading to his arrest by local police.

Witnesses at the scene described the confrontation as tense and unsettling. “He refused to leave or take off his keffiyeh despite repeated instructions. It was clear he was making a political statement at the expense of a safe space for our community,” said one bystander who asked to remain anonymous. The keffiyeh, which has been used by pro‑Palestinian groups as an icon of defiance, has also become a lightning rod for controversy, particularly among Jewish communities already vulnerable to antisemitic intimidation.

Community leaders were swift to condemn Al Wiali’s actions, asserting that such provocative behavior undermines the values of respect and inclusivity that the Centre is meant to uphold. “Our Community Centre is meant to be a sanctuary where Jewish people can feel secure and respected. Actions like these only serve to deepen divisions and fuel hate,” said a spokesperson for the Centre.

Toronto Police confirmed that Al Wiali was taken into custody on charges of mischief and disorderly conduct. “Incidents that disrupt the peaceful operation of community spaces and incite tension are taken very seriously by our department,” commented a local officer.

This incident is the latest in a series of confrontations involving pro‑Palestinian activists on Canadian campuses and community centers, where extremist rhetoric and provocative symbols have frequently led to public outcry. Critics argue that while peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democratic expression, deliberately inciting discord and disregarding the feelings and safety of minority communities cross a line that cannot be tolerated.

Authorities are currently reviewing the incident, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.

  1. Palestinians are allowed to exist, contrary to what Israel believes. Disgusting behaviour by JCC and Police.

  2. You are mistaken. This is Canada. A Palestinian keffiyeh is not a political garment, it is a cultural one,as I understand it, representing olives and fishing nets. You cannot arrest everyone you disagree with. I stand with the Jewish voice for Peace, and the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. You have a beautiful community and community center, but you must respect the Canadian charter.

    • No its a warrior outfit from Iraq. It means kill Jews. They do like useful idiots who defend them. No one cares about expression. This is war and he is a combatant.

  3. This article is extremely biased and I’m amazed it has made it to the press. As a journalist you’re supposed to report the news without bias. Explaining the facts. Shame on the j for letting this be published. It should be retracted or severely edited. Ron east should not call himself Canadian as we promote equality and fairness and are against injustices. Canada is not a melting pot. Freedom of religion and culture is ingrained in our hearts. Stand up for peace. Instead he is promoting hate. I’m never reading this again and will ensure others do not as well.
