Circassian Israelis: A Legacy Of Resilience And Unlikely Alliance

From ethnic cleansing in the North Caucasus to heroic support during Israel’s War of Independence, the proud Circassian community in Israel embodies pluralism, mutual respect, and an enduring bond with the Jewish state.

The story of the Circassian community in Israel is a remarkable narrative of survival, conviction, and unity. Indigenous to the North Caucasus, the Circassians endured unspeakable brutality in the 19th century, suffering an ethnic cleansing by the Russian Empire that historians estimate claimed up to 1.5 million lives. Escaping genocide, survivors were forced to leave their ancestral lands and found refuge in the Ottoman Empire.

It was among these displaced peoples that some eventually settled in what would become Israel. Establishing villages such as Kfar Kama and Rehaniya in the Galilee, the Circassians preserved a formidable warrior ethos and a deep commitment to their identity and values. Their history of enduring persecution resonated with another marginalized people—the Jewish community.

During Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, when the nascent state found itself encircled by hostile Arab nations, the Circassians faced a critical decision. Far from joining those calling for war, they made a courageous choice to stand with the Jews, not out of convenience but from a profound sense of shared destiny. Recognizing the plight of the Jewish people, who, like themselves, had long suffered persecution, the Circassians embraced the Zionist dream and became steadfast allies in the fight for survival.

Their bond with Israel only deepened over the years. In 1958, responding to a call from Circassian leaders, young men from the community began to serve voluntarily in the Israel Defense Forces. Today, their service is as obligatory as it is for Jews and Druze, reflecting the integration of the Circassian community into Israeli society.

In a region often fragmented along religious and ethnic lines, the Circassian-Israelis stand as a living example of how pluralism, democracy, and mutual respect can unite communities that might otherwise seem worlds apart. Proud Muslims, proud Circassians, and proud Israelis, they challenge simplistic narratives and remind us that the story of Israel is as complex, humane, and inspiring as it is resilient. Their example proves that in the face of adversity, alliances can transcend historical enmity, forging a future defined by unity and shared purpose.
