In a disturbing escalation of anti-Israel sentiment manifesting as violence against Jewish leaders, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence was targeted in a deliberate arson attack during the early hours of April 13, 2025. The suspect, 38-year-old Cody Balmer, has been charged with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and related offenses. Authorities allege that Balmer scaled a fence, broke windows, and threw Molotov cocktails into the residence while Governor Shapiro, his family, and guests were inside celebrating Passover.
According to court documents, Balmer confessed to harboring hatred toward Governor Shapiro and expressed intentions to harm him physically. He reportedly stated that he “harbored hate” toward the governor and planned to beat him with a hammer if confronted.
According to the warrant, Balmer told police that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro must know that he “will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people.” He also told 911 operators that he had to “stop having my friends killed” and claimed, “Our people have been put through too much by that monster.” Balmer added, “You all know where to find me. I’m not hiding, and I will confess to everything that I had done.”
Governor Shapiro, a prominent Jewish Democrat and vocal supporter of Israel, has previously condemned anti-Israel protests that targeted Jewish-owned businesses, labeling such actions as blatant antisemitism. The attack on his residence underscores the growing threats faced by Jewish leaders who stand firmly with Israel amidst rising anti-Israel rhetoric.
The incident occurred shortly after Governor Shapiro shared a photo of his family’s Seder table on social media, marking the beginning of Passover, a holiday symbolizing liberation and resilience. While no injuries were reported, the fire caused significant damage to the south wing of the residence.
This attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked anti-Israel sentiment that often veers into antisemitism. As Jewish communities worldwide continue to face threats, it is imperative to confront and denounce such acts of hatred unequivocally.
