Brussels Stolpersteine Smeared With “Gaza” Graffiti In Vile Antisemitic Attack

Belgian Jewish groups and European Jewish Congress condemn co-option of Holocaust memorials as propaganda façade

Desecration Discovered in Central Brussels

Stolpersteine in Brussels’ historic Marolles district were discovered early on April 22, 2025, defaced with large white letters spelling “Gaza” alongside imagery equating Israel’s conflict with Hamas to Nazi genocide, according to CCOJB. Photographs released by the committee show at least half a dozen stumbling stones scrawled with the slogans, a stark desecration of memorials laid at victims’ former doorsteps. Volunteers from local Jewish youth groups had just cleaned identical stones only days earlier, a testament to the transience of the damage and the persistence required to guard Holocaust memory.

Jewish Organizations Sound the Alarm

“We strongly condemn this exploitation of the memory of the Holocaust, as well as any attempt to trivialize or deny its history,” CCOJB declared in a Facebook statement. On X/Twitter, the European Jewish Congress added: “We firmly condemn the desecration of Stolpersteine in Brussels, a vile distortion of history and a desecration of memory … The memory of the Shoah must be preserved with dignity, not manipulated for political ends.”

A Wave of Vandalism Across Europe

This Brussels attack is part of a broader wave of antisemitic defacements:

  • In Belgrade, a Holocaust memorial was vandalized for the third time in April with graffiti reading “Gaza will not become a hotel.”
  • Last June, seven Stolpersteine in Weimar were daubed with “Jews are perpetrators,” underscoring the neo-Nazi undertones of such actions.
  • In March, the Oud-Beijerland monument in the Netherlands was splashed with red paint and Gaza slogans.
  • Even Brussels schools have felt the fallout: two headteachers in Anderlecht refused to participate in installing new Stolpersteine as students equated the Gaza war with the Holocaust.
  • Homes of Holocaust survivors in Fléron were also spray-painted with “Gaza Free” and swastikas in April 2024, illustrating a domestic dimension to the surge.

Law Enforcement Opens Hate-Crime Probe

Brussels police have classified the defacement as criminal damage with a hate-crime enhancement and launched a full investigation, appealing for CCTV footage and eyewitness testimony to identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been made, but investigators stress the importance of community cooperation to protect memorial sites.

Protecting Holocaust Memory Against Political Extremism

Jewish and pro-Israel leaders are demanding concrete measures:

  1. Stronger legal penalties for hate-motivated vandalism against Holocaust memorials.
  2. Increased surveillance and rapid-response cleaning teams to deter repeat offenses.
  3. Mandatory education programs clarifying that equating Israel’s war against terror with the Holocaust is both historically inaccurate and deeply antisemitic.

Only by uniting behind robust enforcement and uncompromising education can Europe ensure that the memory of the Shoah remains beyond the reach of hateful ideologues. Continuous vigilance and decisive action are essential to safeguard these stones of remembrance for future generations.
