Vigil Erupts into Violence
Hundreds gathered on April 22 outside Footscray Mall for a vigil demanding justice for Ahmed. What began with placards reading “Mental health needs care, not bullets” and chants of “we want justice” devolved into violent confrontations when some protestors, identifying as Muslim community members, advanced on police lines, hurling bottles and other objects.
According to ABC News, a largely peaceful assembly turned ugly when protestors attempted to breach barricades, leading to scuffles that left at least two officers requiring treatment and prompted reinforcements in riot gear. Nine News footage shows demonstrators shouting “we will not be silenced” as they physically confronted frontline officers.

Community Leaders and Police Response
Somali Community Inc. president Farah Warsame condemned both the use of deadly force and the violent turn of the vigil, calling for an impartial coroner’s inquest alongside swift condemnation of assaults on officers. Victoria Police confirmed that the Homicide Squad is investigating Ahmed’s shooting and issued a warning: “Violent attacks on police will not be tolerated.”
Broader Context of Islamist-Inspired Violence
These clashes reflect a wider pattern of extremist threats in Victoria. In 2014, Abdul Numan Haider, an ISIS sympathizer, attacked counter-terrorism officers with knives outside the Endeavour Hills station and was shot dead by police. In 2017, the Brighton Siege saw a gunman claim allegiance to the Islamic State after killing and taking hostages in Brighton, Melbourne.
More recently, anti-war protesters clashed with police outside the Land Forces defense expo, with some chanting pro-Palestine slogans and clashing violently, resulting in dozens of arrests and injured officers. These incidents underscore the real and growing risk of Islamist-inspired violence that threatens both public safety and communal harmony, risks that Jewish and pro-Israel communities watch with particular concern.
