Origins and Presidential Proclamation

Jewish American Heritage Month was created in 2006 through bipartisan congressional efforts led by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sen. Arlen Specter and enacted by President George W. Bush’s proclamation, recognizing May as dedicated to celebrating Jewish American achievements. Since then, each president has issued annual proclamations reaffirming the importance of Jewish values, such as perseverance, innovation, and community, in shaping the nation’s character. The White House Proclamation emphasizes that Jewish American culture has been “inextricably woven into the fabric of our country,” tracing roots back to early settlers who sought religious freedom and opportunity.

2025 Theme and Signature Programming

Powered by The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, JAHM 2025 features a series of signature events alongside partnerships with over 200 organizations, ranging from museums and universities to synagogues and libraries. Highlights include in-person exhibitions, live panel discussions, and virtual tours designed for broad national access. For the first time, the “American Jewish Mosaic” contest invites storytellers, artists, and changemakers to submit entries across four categories by May 12, with $50,000 in prizes and winners honored at a Congressional Reception in Washington, D.C.

Resources for Educators and Communities

To support K–12 and higher-education curricula, JAHM provides diverse classroom materials, including lesson plans, posters, and a 30-second PSA video celebrating Jewish American heritage. Academic libraries like Foothill-De Anza College have curated LibGuides showcasing events, articles, and archival resources to deepen understanding of Jewish history in America. Public libraries across the country, such as the Los Angeles Public Library, host storytimes, film screenings, and cultural workshops throughout May.

National Archives and Cultural Institutions

The National Archives, Library of Congress, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum are collaborating on digital exhibits and public programs that spotlight Jewish American milestones—from wartime service to suffrage, from scientific breakthroughs to civil rights leadership. These initiatives aim to preserve and share personal narratives, photographs, and documents that chronicle Jewish contributions to American democracy and culture.

Combating Antisemitism Through Celebration

Jewish American Heritage Month serves as an antidote to rising antisemitism by highlighting the positive impact of Jewish values and achievements. The Anti-Defamation League urges Americans to use JAHM as “an opportunity to challenge myths, confront bigotry, and honor the rich tapestry of Jewish life in the United States.” Community organizations encourage public participation, attending events, sharing stories on social media, and promoting interfaith dialogue to foster solidarity and understanding.

Looking Ahead: A Call to Action

As JAHM begins on May 1, organizers invite all Americans—Jewish and non-Jewish alike—to engage with the month’s programming. Visit JewishAmericanHeritage.org for a complete events calendar, resource library, and ways to contribute to the “American Jewish Mosaic” contest. Through education, celebration, and collective remembrance, Jewish American Heritage Month ensures that the legacy of American Jews continues to inspire future generations.
