In the face of rising antisemitism and growing food insecurity in Toronto’s Jewish community, a local Jewish family has partnered with Aviv Immigrant Kitchen to host a one-of-a-kind Shabbat-inspired fundraiser benefiting the Pride of Israel Food Bank. Set against the verdant backdrop of Aviv’s open-air patio on May 9, the event promises to blend tradition, community, and music in service of a shared mission: putting food on the table for those who need it most.

The fundraiser will open with a community Shabbat service, led by local clergy and featuring readings from the Torah. Students from the nearby Jewish day school will join in song, reaffirming the power of youth to carry forward our heritage and values. Between prayers and blessings, guests will enjoy Aviv’s acclaimed Jewish–South American fusion cuisine, with a portion of every dish sold directed straight to the food bank.

A highlight of the evening is the piano performance by six-year-old Jacob Lynus Derkson. Bearing the same fierce pride as the event itself, Jacob’s repertoire includes stirring renditions of Hatikvah, celebratory Mazel Tov, and the dance-inducing Hava Nagila. His set will be live-streamed, granting virtual attendees a front-row seat in return for a symbolic minimum donation of $18 (chai), a gesture of life and hope in Jewish tradition. All proceeds from these livestreams will be funneled directly to the Pride of Israel Food Bank.

Over recent months, the Pride of Israel Food Bank has witnessed a sharp rise in demand from families struggling under economic pressures. Despite an outpouring of community spirit, its operating funds have not kept pace with need. Event organizers are optimistic that the Derksons’ uplifting evening of music, food, and fellowship will both raise vital dollars and reinforce communal bonds at a time when solidarity is more crucial than ever.

“Why are we doing this?” “With all the negativity and antisemitism in the world, we wanted to lean into what gives us joy: music, food, Jewish tradition, and giving tzedakah.” They hope that this evening will remind attendees, and those watching from home, that our greatest strength lies in unity, compassion, and the shared light of our faith.
