Kneecap’s Coachella Performance Sparks Outrage

At the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Belfast-based rap trio Kneecap displayed messages such as “F**k Israel” and “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people” during their set. These statements were projected on stage screens and shared on the band’s social media platforms, leading to widespread condemnation.

Support for Terrorist Organizations

In addition to their Coachella performance, Kneecap has faced backlash for past remarks supporting proscribed terrorist groups. A video from a November 2024 concert shows a band member chanting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah” while draped in a Hezbollah flag. Both groups are banned under UK law, and expressing support for them is a criminal offense.

Investigations and Political Repercussions

UK counterterrorism police are investigating Kneecap’s actions, including a 2023 performance where a member allegedly said, “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.” These incidents have led to calls from political figures, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, for the band to clarify their stance and apologize.

Apology and Continued Controversy

Kneecap has issued a statement denying support for Hamas and Hezbollah, stating, “We do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always.” They also apologized to the families of murdered MPs David Amess and Jo Cox. However, critics argue that their actions, including the Coachella performance, contradict their statements and continue to incite hatred.

Consequences and Future Performances

Following the controversy, Kneecap has been dropped by their U.S. talent agency, and their U.S. work visas have been revoked. Several festivals, including the Eden Project and TRNSMT, have canceled their performances. The Campaign Against Antisemitism has called for their removal from other festival lineups, citing their rhetoric as fostering hatred.
