The York Regional Police Hate Crime Prevention Unit is investigating two unrelated hate/bias incidents that occurred in the City of Vaughan last week, prompting increased police presence and community outreach in the affected areas.

On Thursday, May 8, officers responded to a report of antisemitic graffiti in a park near Bathurst Street and Major Mackenzie Drive West. Investigators found a swastika spray-painted on the sidewalk. The graffiti was promptly removed, and police are now seeking the public’s help to identify those responsible. Anyone with information or video recordings from the area around the time of the incident is urged to contact the Hate Crime Prevention Unit.

The second incident came to light on Saturday, May 10, after police were made aware of a video circulating on social media. The video, filmed outside Anne Frank Public School, shows a man making menacing gestures. While police have confirmed that no direct threats were made and there is no current risk to public safety, the incident has nonetheless caused alarm, especially as it follows closely on the heels of the antisemitic vandalism. Community sources have identified the individual as Hamood Al-Waili, a man previously known for antisemitic provocations in the Greater Toronto Area.

York Regional Police emphasized that the two incidents are unrelated but acknowledged the heightened concern they have caused within the community. “Both incidents will undergo thorough investigations; however, they are unrelated and are being treated as distinct cases,” said Constable James Dickson.

To promote a safe and inclusive environment for students, staff, and families, Youth Engagement Officers will maintain a visible presence around the affected school throughout the week, and district patrols in the community have been enhanced. The York Region District School Board is working closely with police to support these efforts.

“Hate has no place in York Region,” police stated, reaffirming their commitment to thoroughly investigating all reports of hate crimes and hate/bias incidents. Residents are encouraged to report any such incidents immediately to the police.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact the York Regional Police Hate Crime Prevention Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6552, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or submit an anonymous tip online.
