Hate Strikes at a Place of Learning

On May 5th, what should have been an ordinary day for students at Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes in North Miami Beach turned into a moment of fear and outrage. Jose Garrido, a repeat offender, appeared outside the private Jewish school not once, but twice.
First, he brazenly threw an object at Jewish children playing on the school field. Minutes later, he returned wearing black gloves and brandishing a whip. He tried to rip a kippah off a child’s head and took an aggressive stance, whip in hand, harassing and intimidating the young students.
Swift Justice, Unwavering Resolve
Thanks to the quick response of local police, Garrido was arrested and charged with harassment and intimidation based on religion or ethnic heritage, as well as possession of cocaine. The charges send a clear message: antisemitic violence and intimidation will not be tolerated in Miami, or anywhere in America.
But for the families and staff at Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes, the trauma lingers. No child should ever fear for their safety at school, and no Jewish family should have to wonder if their children will be targeted simply for wearing a kippah or living proudly as Jews.
A Community United in Jewish and Zionist Pride
This attack is a stark reminder that antisemitism is not a relic of the past; it is a present danger that must be confronted with vigilance and unity. Yet, the response from Miami’s Jewish community has been one of resilience and pride. Parents, teachers, and local leaders have rallied together, reaffirming their commitment to Jewish education, tradition, and their unbreakable bond with Israel.
For families and staff, Zionism remains a source of strength and inspiration. The Jewish community will not be cowed by hate. Instead, they will continue to celebrate their heritage, defend their right to live openly and proudly, and teach the next generation to stand tall in the face of adversity.
Standing Up for What’s Right
Now, more than ever, it is crucial for allies, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, to speak out against antisemitism and support the safety and dignity of Jewish communities everywhere. Law enforcement, educators, and civic leaders must work together to ensure that every Jewish child can learn, play, and grow without fear.
