On May 20, 2025, the Manitoba NDP government marked Jewish Heritage Month with a special event held at the Manitoba Legislative Building. The celebration brought together Premier Wab Kinew, MLAs, Jewish community leaders, and cultural performers to recognize the rich history, culture, and enduring contributions of Manitoba’s Jewish community.
The event featured performances by the Chai dancers, who showcased traditional Jewish dance, and speeches emphasizing the importance of remembering Jewish heritage and combating antisemitism in Manitoba and beyond. Premier Kinew joined other officials in affirming the government’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and education.
The Jewish community in Manitoba has a long history of resilience and achievement despite facing discrimination in earlier decades. Recent initiatives, including the introduction of mandatory Holocaust education in Manitoba public schools starting fall 2025, underscore the province’s dedication to fostering understanding and preventing hatred.
Jewish leaders at the event praised the government’s efforts to promote awareness and inclusion. The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada continue to work closely with provincial authorities to support educational programs and cultural celebrations.
The event also served as a platform to highlight the ongoing challenges posed by antisemitism and the importance of community solidarity. Manitoba’s Jewish Heritage Month celebration is part of a broader movement across Canada to honor Jewish history and culture while confronting prejudice and promoting human rights.
