Two Israeli Embassy Employees Killed In Antisemitic Shooting Outside Washington Jewish Museum

Attack during American Jewish Committee event shocks nationโ€™s capital; Israeli and U.S. officials condemn act as โ€œdepraved antisemitic terrorism.โ€

A tragic act of antisemitic violence struck the heart of the U.S. capital Wednesday evening when two Israeli embassy employees were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum during an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Several others, including additional embassy personnel, were reportedly injured in the attack, which authorities are investigating as a politically motivated hate crime.

The shooting occurred near the FBIโ€™s Washington Field Office and close to the D.C. Police Department headquarters, underscoring the brazen nature of the assault. The assailant reportedly shouted โ€œFree Palestine!โ€ before being apprehended by law enforcement, who have taken the suspect into custody. The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force has assumed control of the investigation.

Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, which hosted the event, expressed profound sorrow:
โ€œWe are devastated that an unspeakable act of violence took place outside the venue. At this moment, as we await further details from law enforcement regarding what exactly occurred, our focus and thoughts are entirely with those affected and their families.โ€

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon condemned the attack in unequivocal terms on X (formerly Twitter):
โ€œThe tragic shooting that occurred outside the event at the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC โ€“ where Israeli embassy personnel were also injured โ€“ is a vile act of antisemitic terrorism. Harming the Jewish community is crossing a red line. We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act. Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives everywhere in the world.โ€

An embassy spokesperson confirmed that the Israeli ambassador to the United States was not present during the incident and was not involved.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation, emphasizing the gravity of the attack. Local police have urged the public to avoid the area in Northwest D.C. as the investigation continues.

Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as the gunman opened fire outside the museum during a closed-door gathering of Israeli diplomats and Jewish professionals. One witness reported that after the shooting, the suspect entered the museum, demanded water and a safe place, then brandished a keffiyeh and shouted โ€œFree Palestineโ€ before being removed by police.

This heinous attack comes amid heightened global tensions and rising antisemitism, underscoring the persistent threats facing Jewish communities worldwide. The Jewish Museum event was focused on humanitarian efforts in the Middle East and North Africa, including Gaza, making the timing and location of the attack especially poignant.

The American Jewish Committee and Israeli officials have pledged to work closely with U.S. law enforcement to ensure justice is served and to reinforce the protection of Jewish institutions and diplomats.

As the investigation unfolds, the Jewish community and allies across North America stand united in mourning the loss of life and in condemning the scourge of antisemitic violence.
