Toronto – Toronto Police announced the arrest of 26-year-old Basel Al-Sukhon of Toronto in connection with a series of hate-motivated death threats directed at the Israeli community. The charges include uttering threats and indecent communications.
Between May 21 and May 24, 2025, Al-Sukhon allegedly posted multiple threatening messages on social media platforms, explicitly targeting Israelis and Jews with hateful and violent language. The Hate Crime Unit of Toronto Police promptly launched an investigation, leading to his identification and arrest on May 24.
Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue praised the swift action taken by the Hate Crime Unit, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable communities from hate and intimidation. “Toronto remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its residents, and hate-motivated threats will not be tolerated,” Pogue stated.
This arrest comes amid a disturbing surge in antisemitic incidents in Toronto, which saw a historic high in hate crimes in 2024. According to the Toronto Police Service’s 2024 Annual Hate Crime Statistical Report, Jewish communities, though less than four percent of the city’s population, accounted for 40 percent of all reported hate crimes. These incidents include vandalism, threats, and assaults.
Jewish and Zionist organizations have welcomed the arrest as a necessary step toward combating the rising tide of antisemitism. “This arrest sends a clear message that hate speech and threats against Jewish Canadians will be met with decisive legal action. Our community deserves safety and respect.”
The arrest coincided with the annual United Jewish Appeal’s Walk With Israel event in Toronto, which drew over 55,000 participants demonstrating solidarity with Israel amidst ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The event faced disruptions from pro-Palestinian protesters, underscoring the tense atmosphere surrounding Jewish and Israeli communities in Canada.
Israeli consular officials in Toronto expressed their appreciation for Canadian law enforcement’s vigilance. “Protecting Israelis and Jews abroad is a priority, and we commend Toronto Police for their swift response to threats against our community.”
Basel Al-Sukhon is scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre. The investigation remains ongoing, and police continue to urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
