Toronto Police Seek Suspect In String Of Hate-Motivated Attacks On North York Synagogues

Jewish leaders call for vigilance and unity after a series of targeted vandalism incidents threaten Toronto’s vibrant Jewish community

Toronto – Toronto’s Jewish community is reeling after a series of targeted vandalism incidents at synagogues in North York, with police confirming they are investigating the acts as hate-motivated crimes.

The attacks, which occurred on May 18, 2025, saw a man deface signs on the front lawns and buildings of three separate synagogues along Bayview Avenue, between Finch Avenue East and Lawrence Avenue East.

Surveillance images released by Toronto Police show the suspect, a middle-aged man with a medium build and facial hair, wearing a dark green sweater, a dark baseball cap, and light-colored pants. He was last seen fleeing the scene in a dark grey Ford pickup truck.

Investigators believe this individual is also responsible for similar hate-motivated vandalism at a synagogue in the Bayview Avenue and York Mills Road area on December 2 and December 20, 2024.

For Toronto’s Jewish community, these attacks are deeply personal. Synagogues are more than places of worship, they are centers of learning, celebration, and resilience. To see them targeted in this way is a painful reminder of the persistence of antisemitism, even in one of the world’s most multicultural cities.

Jewish organizations have responded with a call for unity and vigilance. “These attacks are not just against buildings, but against the heart of our community. We will not be intimidated. We stand together, proud of our heritage and our contributions to Canadian society.”

Toronto Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that hate crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If convicted, hate as an aggravating factor can lead to harsher sentencing.

Community leaders are encouraging residents to remain alert and to support one another, especially as Jewish communities worldwide face rising threats.

This string of attacks comes at a time when Jewish pride and resilience are more important than ever. As the people of Toronto rally around their Jewish neighbors, the message is clear: hate has no place here. The city’s response, swift, united, and resolute, demonstrates the enduring strength of the Jewish spirit and the values of tolerance and justice that define Canada.
