Unmasking Antisemitism: How “Pro-Palestinian” Chants Are Weaponized to Target Jews
Since the horrific Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, a wave of “pro-Palestinian” chants has swept across college campuses, protests, and public demonstrations worldwide.
While advocacy for Palestinian rights remains a legitimate and essential part of democratic discourse and human rights activism, a dangerous trend has emerged: extremist rhetoric cloaked as activism is increasingly used to incite violence and hatred against Jewish individuals and communities.
The Anti-Defamation League and other watchdogs have documented how chants such as “Globalize the Intifada,” “There is only one solution, Intifada revolution,” and “From the River to the Sea” have transcended protest slogans to become rallying cries that fuel antisemitic violence.
These phrases, often heard at rallies near Jewish institutions, have been linked to physical attacks, vandalism, and even deadly violence, including the fatal shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.
The Dangerous Blurring of Advocacy and Incitement
The phrase “Globalize the Intifada” calls for an aggressive uprising against Israel and its supporters worldwide. While “intifada” literally means “uprising,” its modern usage is inseparable from violent campaigns targeting Israeli civilians.
This slogan has appeared at major demonstrations, including in Toronto and Montreal, a city with a significant Hasidic Jewish population. The violent “Jew hunt” in Amsterdam in November 2024 further illustrates how such rhetoric is interpreted as a license for physical attacks on Jews globally.
Similarly, “There is only one solution, Intifada revolution” glorifies violent struggle and has been used to harass Jews outside synagogues and Jewish institutions, crossing from political protest into antisemitic incitement.
“Resistance by Any Means Necessary” and the Endorsement of Terrorism
Some pro-Palestinian activists openly justify the October 7 Hamas terror attacks as “resistance by any means necessary,” endorsing violence that killed over 1,200 Israeli civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.
Groups like Within Our Lifetime (WOL) have orchestrated large-scale rallies echoing Hamas’ “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” inciting followers to “resist colonial imperialism by any means necessary,” including armed struggle.
Such rhetoric not only glorifies terrorism but also endangers Jewish communities worldwide by normalizing violence as a political tool.
The “From the River to the Sea” Slogan: Erasing Israel and Endangering Jews
The chant “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is frequently used in protests and online discourse. While some interpret it as a call for Palestinian statehood alongside Israel, it has historically been a call for the elimination of the Jewish state.
Originating from the Palestine Liberation Organization and later adopted by Hamas, it implies the expulsion of Jews from the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
When paired with calls to exclude “Zionists,” a common euphemism for Jews, from political and social life, the slogan becomes a dangerous incitement to ethnic cleansing and antisemitism.
“Free Palestine” and the Weaponization of Legitimate Advocacy
“Free Palestine” is a phrase that, in many contexts, calls for justice, self-determination, and an end to occupation. However, it has also been weaponized to justify antisemitic harassment, vandalism of Jewish institutions, and even violence.
From synagogues defaced with “Free Palestine” graffiti to online abuse targeting Jews, the phrase’s misuse highlights the fine line between advocacy and hate.
The Myth of “Settler Colonialism” and the Delegitimization of Jewish Self-Determination
The term “settler colonialism” is frequently deployed by far-left activists to delegitimize Jewish claims to Israel, falsely portraying Jews as colonial oppressors. This narrative ignores millennia of continuous Jewish presence in the land and the UN-backed partition plan that envisioned two states.
Labeling Israel as a colonialist project not only distorts history but also fuels antisemitism by justifying violence against Israelis and those who support Israel’s right to exist.
The Urgent Need to Distinguish Advocacy from Hate
Freedom of speech and advocacy for Palestinian rights are democratic principles. Yet, as the line between legitimate protest and antisemitic incitement blurs, it becomes imperative for all people of conscience to condemn language that demonizes Jews or legitimizes violence.
To protect Jewish communities worldwide and advance peace, society must reject slogans that incite hatred and violence, while supporting genuine human rights advocacy that respects the dignity and safety of all.
