Dearborn – In a disturbing case that highlights the persistent threat of antisemitic violence in North America, Hassan Chokr, 37, of Dearborn, Michigan, pleaded guilty to federal charges of being a felon in possession of firearms after threatening Jewish families and attempting to purchase assault weapons to carry out a massacre at a Jewish preschool.
In December 2022, while out on bail, Chokr drove through the parking lot of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, a Detroit suburb, shouting vile antisemitic slurs and threats at parents and children entering the synagogueโs preschool. Witnesses heard him yell chilling phrases such as โYou are all going to die!โ and โFโ you, Israel,โ as families dropped off their young children.
Following the tirade, Chokr went to a gun store in Dearborn, where he attempted to purchase a shotgun, a rifle, and a semi-automatic pistol. Despite lying on the application about his felony conviction, the background check revealed his criminal record, and the sale was denied. During the attempted purchase, he handled multiple firearms and reportedly said he intended to โeven the scoreโ and use the weapons for โGodโs wrath.โ
Federal prosecutors have described Chokrโs actions as part of a broader plot to terrorize and harm Jewish families at a place of worship, calling it โevery Americanโs worst nightmare.โ U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. condemned the threats and the attempted gun purchase, affirming the governmentโs commitment to protecting Jewish Americansโ right to live and worship free from fear.
Chokr faces up to 15 years in prison at his sentencing scheduled for September 24, 2025. He also faces state charges of ethnic intimidation related to the incident.
This case underscores the ongoing dangers Jewish communities face from violent antisemitism. It also highlights the critical importance of vigilant law enforcement and community solidarity in confronting hate.
“This frightening plot to attack innocent children at a Jewish preschool is a stark reminder that antisemitism remains a deadly threat. We must remain united in defending our communities and Israel against hatred and violence.”
Jewish American and Canadian communities continue to stand firm in their support for Israel and their commitment to combating antisemitism in all its forms, demanding justice and security for all Jewish people.
