Canadian Red Cross Executive Visits West Bank Amid Ongoing Hostage Crisis In Gaza

West Bank – Kelsey Lemon, Vice-President of International Cooperation at the Canadian Red Cross, visited the West Bank this week to observe emergency medical care delivery by the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the Canadian Red Cross, according to an official Red Cross blog post. The visit comes as 55 Israeli hostages remain held in Gaza, with families and advocacy groups expressing frustration over the lack of visible Red Cross efforts to secure access to the captives.

During her visit, Lemon met with PRCS staff and volunteers in the Alfara’a Camp, West Bank, and highlighted the commitment of local teams to providing first aid, outreach, and emergency supplies amid ongoing conflict. “Despite the difficult circumstances the teams in West Bank and Gaza face every day, the staff and volunteers at PRCS remain incredibly committed to their humanitarian objectives,” Lemon wrote.

The Canadian Red Cross emphasized its partnership with the PRCS in supporting medical care and humanitarian relief in both the West Bank and Gaza. Volunteers described delivering food, medicine, and emergency services to residents affected by military operations and movement restrictions.

However, the visit has drawn criticism from families of Israeli hostages and pro-Israel organizations. They note that, despite the International Committee of the Red Cross’s (ICRC) mandate to visit detainees and advocate for their welfare, there has been no publicized Red Cross access to the 55 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza. Critics also point out that Lemon’s communications and official reports did not mention the hostages, Hamas, or terrorism.

The ICRC has previously stated it is working to gain access to all detainees and continues to call for the immediate release of hostages, but families say these efforts have been insufficient. “The silence is deeply painful for families who have waited months for news of their loved ones,” said a spokesperson for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum in Israel.

The Canadian Red Cross has not issued a statement regarding the hostages or the ongoing demands for Red Cross intervention in Gaza. Lemon’s focus during the trip remained on the humanitarian partnership with the PRCS and the challenges faced by medical teams in the region.

As the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank remains dire, calls continue for the Red Cross and other international organizations to address the plight of Israeli hostages and uphold their responsibilities under international law.
