RAMAT GAN – Bar‑Ilan University’s Cancer, AIDS and Immunology Research (CAIR) Institute awarded the Tovi Comet‑Walerstein Science Prize to Prof. Michael Heneka. The award recognizes his significant contributions to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease research.

David Walerstein, vice chair of Canadian Friends of Bar‑Ilan University and founder of the award in memory of his late wife, Dr. Tovi Comet‑Walerstein, presented the prize. Tovi Comet‑Walerstein was a dedicated cancer researcher and compassionate caregiver, remembered for maintaining a helpline during her own illness.

Prof. Heneka leads the Luxembourg Centre of Systems Biomedicine and holds a clinical neurology professorship at the University of Luxembourg. He is a board‑certified neurologist with more than 25 years of experience studying neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia, Alzheimer’s, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease at experimental, preclinical, and clinical stages.

Prof. Benjamin Sredni, founding director of the CAIR Institute, praised the award as “a beacon of excellence in the fields of cancer research, immunology, neuroscience, and biomedical science.”

Bar‑Ilan University president Prof. Arie Zaban noted the symbolism of Heneka’s name, saying his “groundbreaking discoveries… have the potential to create nothing short of a miracle.”

Heneka described the recognition as “a profound encouragement” for his work and said the award carries special significance in honoring Dr. Walerstein’s blend of scientific innovation and human compassion.

The award, established by the Walerstein family, honors Tovi Comet‑Walerstein’s legacy as both a scientist and a caregiver. Bar‑Ilan University also established a research chair in her memory within the CAIR Institute.

The prize underscores the global importance of biomedical research in addressing pressing medical challenges and recognizes scientists whose work mirrors Tovi Comet‑Walerstein’s dedication. Previous recipients have included Nobel laureates and other leading figures in medical science.

This award reaffirms the CAIR Institute’s mission to promote cutting‑edge research in cancer, AIDS, immunology, and neuroscience by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
