NASHVILLE โ The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a federal lawsuit on June 17 against the Goyim Defense League and its leadership. The complaint alleges the extremist group conducted a deliberate campaign to assault, harass, and intimidate Jewish and Black residents in Nashville in midโJuly 2024.
The lawsuit was submitted on behalf of a young biracial man who was assaulted during the groupโs soโcalled โroadshow of hate.โ It cites violations of the federal Ku Klux Klan Act as well as charges of assault, battery, and malicious harassment.
Scott McCoy, the SPLCโs deputy legal director, said, โHate, racial and religious intolerance has no place in Tennessee or in this nation. This lawsuit seeks to hold the members of the GDL accountable for their harmful actions in Nashville.โ
According to the complaint, GDL members carried swastika flags and shouted slurs while targeting people they believed to be Black or Jewish, including a group of young Black children. They also allegedly disrupted a public meeting, distributed antisemitic flyers, and violently attacked two young men identified by race or Jewish ancestry.
Attorney Ben Raybin, coโcounsel representing the plaintiff, said, โWe live in a time where the most brazen extremists can wander the streets and cause harm to vulnerable communities with near impunity.โ Erika Jacobsen White, another coโcounsel, added, โIt is critical in a time when hate is emboldened that we are not intimidated but are instead empowered to seek justice.โ
The SPLC said the GDL engaged in repeated demonstrations nationwide and praised extremist ideologies. In Nashville, the lawsuit says the actions were livestreamed to recruit followers and amplify fear.
Southern Poverty Law Center officials said the lawsuit aims to hold the GDL to account and deter similar campaigns. The complaint seeks damages and an injunction to prevent future actions that threaten the safety of minority communities.
