Art House Toronto Faces Backlash Over ‘Death To The IDF’ Poster

Pro-Israel groups condemn promotional art depicting skull in Nazi-style helmet emblazoned with Israeli flag

TORONTO – Art House Toronto is under fire after distributing a poster for its upcoming exhibition depicting a skull wearing a Nazi-style helmet marked with an Israeli flag and bearing the slogan “Death, Death to the IDF.” The gallery has since faced public condemnation from pro‑Israel advocacy groups.

The poster shows a bullet hole in the helmet with blood dripping down. Critics say the imagery crosses a line from artistic commentary to hateful propaganda. No verified source or context has been provided by Art House Toronto about the poster’s intended message.

Several Jewish community organizations immediately denounced the image. A spokesperson for one pro‑Israel group described it as an “abhorrent visual assault on Israel’s defenders” that “encourages violence and demonizes soldiers who protect Jewish communities.”

Another activist added, “This is not art, this is a call for murder masked as commentary. It must be condemned and removed immediately.”

Art House Toronto has not issued a public apology or explanation. Gallery representatives declined interview requests and have not clarified whether the poster will be withdrawn or if the exhibit remains scheduled.

The poster appears to be a direct response to the recent Glastonbury Music Festival controversy, where UK punk duo Bob Vylan chanted “Death, Death to the IDF” during their performance. That incident was widely condemned by Jewish organizations in the UK and abroad and has sparked global imitation and backlash.

In response to the Toronto incident, prominent Canadian lawyer and anti-antisemitism advocate Warren Kinsella submitted an official complaint to police. In his letter, Kinsella wrote:

“Please find attached materials that have been publicly circulated by ARTHOUSETO, a community centre located at 640 Page Street in the City of Toronto. It is found on their Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/arthouseto/

The materials circulated by ARTHOUSETO show blood dripping from a helmet worn by a dead IDF soldier, and is framed by the words ‘DEATH DEATH TO THE IDF!’

As a lawyer, I regard this as the utterance of a clear threat to cause death or bodily harm (s. 264.1). It is also advocating killing members of a group – here, Jews (s. 318). It is inarguably hateful (s. 319).

This matter requires immediate investigation and prosecution. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest opportunity about what you intend to do.”

Pro‑Israel advocates are now demanding accountability from Toronto’s cultural leadership. Some are calling for an official review of public funding that may support the gallery. “Government and private sponsors must not subsidize efforts that incite violence against Jewish communities,” one Zionist leader said.

The incident comes amid growing concern over the normalization of anti‑Israel sentiment in Canada’s arts sector. Last year, protests erupted at the Art Gallery of Ontario over perceived pro‑Palestinian bias.

Community leaders are urging institutions across Canada to adopt clear policies opposing imagery that targets Israel or Jewish individuals. “Free expression is vital in art,” noted another organizer. “But there should be zero tolerance for visuals that glorify violence against Jews or their homeland.”
