Canadian Army Investigates “Blue Hackle Mafia” Over Racist And Antisemitic Posts

Lt‑Gen Mike Wright confirms probe into private Facebook group with extremist content

OTTAWA — Canada’s Army has initiated an internal investigation into current and former members linked to a private Facebook group known as the “Blue Hackle Mafia” after revelations of “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and antisemitic comments and images,” Lt. Gen. Mike Wright confirmed Tuesday.

The group was exposed through screenshots reviewed by military leadership. The content reportedly included demeaning jokes, slurs, and hateful imagery targeting women, LGBTQ individuals, and Jewish people.

Wright described the discovery as “abhorrent” and emphasized that the conduct is incompatible with the Army’s values. He stated that the matter has been referred to the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and Professional Standards for further examination.

This latest scandal follows a series of investigations into extremist ideologies within the armed forces. Last year, a separate inquiry uncovered xenophobic content among military personnel in a different private online group.

Defence officials say memorial walls honoring former soldiers must reflect values of respect and inclusion, free from hate. More than 15 incidents involving extremist or hateful behaviour by service members have been documented since late 2021.

Jewish and Zionist advocates have welcomed the Army’s move. They emphasize that eliminating antisemitic bigotry within national institutions is a sign of strength and moral clarity.

“This investigation sends a clear message that hatred will not be tolerated in our armed forces. Canada’s military must be a place where Jewish service members feel secure and respected.”

Lt‑Gen. Wright urged members of the Army who are aware of similar online activity to come forward. He also told the media that commanders must now reinforce training on diversity, inclusion, and appropriate online conduct.

The investigation may lead to disciplinary measures, including dismissal, criminal charges, or official reprimands, depending on each individual’s level of involvement.
