JERUSALEM – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday expressed support for expanding a Hungarian artificial intelligence tool that flags antisemitic content online across Europe.
Netanyahu made the remarks after meeting Kálmán Szalai, president of Hungary’s Action and Protection Foundation, known by the acronym TEV.
TEV representatives described the system as an advanced monitoring platform that identifies antisemitic posts on social media and can report them to authorities. They said the tool is already used in Germany and Austria and that TEV plans a wider European rollout within the next year.
The prime minister warned that antisemitic hatred online and offline affects not only Jewish communities abroad but also Israel’s security. He welcomed the idea of replicating TEV’s model in other countries.
TEV officials told Israeli leaders that recorded antisemitic incidents rose sharply in several European countries since 2020. The figures presented to Israeli officials included steep increases in Germany and the United Kingdom in recent years.
Netanyahu’s endorsement follows close diplomatic ties with Hungary. He visited Budapest earlier this year and was publicly received by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. That visit highlighted cooperation on security and cultural issues between Jerusalem and Budapest.
Supporters of the TEV system say it can speed detection and response to threats. They argue automated monitoring helps law enforcement and community groups document patterns of hate and target interventions.
Critics caution that automated tools raise questions about free expression and the accuracy of automated labeling. They urge clear safeguards, oversight, and transparent criteria for what the system flags as antisemitic. Independent experts have also called for careful testing before technology is scaled across jurisdictions.
The Israeli prime minister said international cooperation is essential to curb antisemitism even while Israel faces complex security challenges. He framed the TEV tool as one practical step in protecting Jewish communities and countering narratives that incite violence.
