TORONTO, ON — Barry Avrich’s documentary The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue won the People’s Choice Documentary Award at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, festival organizers said.
The film tells the story of retired Israeli Major General Noam Tibon and his efforts to rescue family members and others during the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023. The subject matter sparked protests at the film’s premiere and intense debate over the film’s place in the festival.
Festival organizers briefly removed the film from the lineup before reinstating it after negotiations. The reinstatement and the film’s subsequent audience award drew wide attention.
Avrich accepted the award at TIFF’s ceremony and thanked audiences for their support. He said that the audience vote was meaningful after the film’s contentious debut.
The screening attracted competing demonstrations by pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups outside the venue. Festival officials and community leaders responded with statements urging respectful discourse while acknowledging the strong feelings the film provoked.
For many Jewish and pro-Israel viewers, the film struck a resonant chord. Supporters said the documentary gives a voice to survivors and highlights the human cost of terrorism in southern Israel. Those concerns contributed to vigorous debate about artistic programming and public accountability at major festivals.
The Road Between Us was named the People’s Choice Documentary Award winner by TIFF audiences. Festival officials listed the film as the documentary category winner in their announcement of 2025 prize recipients.
