JERUSALEM – More than 1,400 evangelical Christians from across the globe gathered in Jerusalem this week to express solidarity with Israel amid ongoing regional challenges. The event, centered on the Jewish festival of Sukkot, coincided with the announcement of a ceasefire and the anticipated release of hostages, drawing both celebration and reflection from attendees.

Participants came from more than 60 countries, including large delegations from the United States, Finland, Fiji, and Canada. Events were organized by the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ), with hundreds joining a city park march and others filling Jerusalem’s convention center for prayer, music, and expressions of support for Israel’s people.

ICEJ and other Christian Zionist organizations present stated that support for Israel is seen as both a moral responsibility and a spiritual calling. David Parsons, ICEJ spokesperson, reflected, “It’s still prophetic and a moral debt to the Jewish people, and spiritual, too, because we owe our Messiah to them”.

This year’s gathering was especially poignant, coming just after the second anniversary of the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, which launched the current war in Gaza. As news broke of a tentative agreement to pause fighting and free hostages, participants responded with prayers of thanks and renewed commitment to peace.

Litiana Trout, a visitor from Fiji, shared, “We’ve been praying for this, and we know God is in control,” as she marched with Fijian and American flags on her hat. Sara Maskiewicz of Canada, waving her national flag, added, “I love Israel and the Jewish people, and I want to let them know my government doesn’t speak for everybody in Canada”.

The ICEJ underscores the prophetic role Jerusalem plays in Christian tradition, noting that many attendees believe their participation fulfills biblical promises linking Christians and Jews. Hundreds of Christians traveled from countries as diverse as Azerbaijan, Zimbabwe, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Iran. The Iranian flag-bearer’s presence was met with a standing ovation, symbolizing the global dimension of Christian Zionist support for Israel.

The annual march and convocation were complemented by prayer sessions, worship, and moments of interfaith dialogue. Organizers noted that these gatherings aim to provide moral comfort and strengthen Israel’s position as it faces international criticism and political isolation.

Evangelical support, particularly from North America and Europe, continues to play a significant role in Israel’s diplomatic landscape. As several governments have recently recognized a Palestinian state and public opinion has shifted in response to the Gaza conflict, Christian Zionist groups reaffirm their solidarity and urge governments to maintain ties with Israel.

“It hurts my heart that my government is ignorant of the Bible, that those who stand with Israel are blessed,” said Maskiewicz, alluding to Canada’s policy shift. ICEJ leaders argue such support is grounded in both scriptural faith and recognition of Israel as a pillar of regional stability and Jewish heritage.

Alongside celebration, many participants emphasized their shared hopes for peace and security for all peoples of the region. The ceasefire announcement was received as an answer to prayer, even as ICEJ leaders cautioned that the path to harmony remains difficult. Events concluded with global prayers for Israeli security, hostages’ safe return, and ongoing reconciliation efforts.

In a time of mounting uncertainty and shifting international sentiment, evangelical Christians have renewed their public commitment to Israel and aspirations for genuine peace. Their pilgrimage to Jerusalem during Sukkot, historic and symbolically rich, encourages the Jewish state and echoes the enduring ties between Christian Zionists and the people of Israel.
