RI Coalition For Israel Demands Answers After Smithfield Reinstates Football Players Accused In Antisemitic Hazing

Group calls on Superintendent Dr. Bartz to explain reversal and to meet about training, accountability and protections for Jewish students.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. โ€” The Rhode Island Coalition for Israel on Friday urged Smithfield school officials to explain why five football players accused of a violent, antisemitic hazing attack were returned to play, calling the reversal a breach of trust that risks normalizing Jew hatred in local schools.

In an open letter addressed to Superintendent Dr. Bartz, the coalition, a statewide group of Jewish and Christian community leaders, requested a full account of who decided to reinstate the players and why. The letter asks for details on what disciplinary steps were taken, why suspension from extracurricular activities was not enforced, and what mandatory training on antisemitism will be provided to students.

The letter, signed by Maria Friedman, executive director, and Ken Schneider, board president of the Rhode Island Coalition for Israel, described the underlying incident as a โ€œhorrificโ€ episode in which a Jewish freshman was subjected to harassment and slurs. The coalition said the subsequent reinstatement of the students who allegedly perpetrated the harassment has left the family and the wider community outraged.

Local reporting shows the school had earlier barred several Smithfield High School football players from the season while investigating allegations of hazing and antisemitic behavior. Initial disciplinary actions drew broad attention from community groups, but the later reversal prompted criticism from Jewish organizations and civil rights advocates.

The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center also issued a joint statement condemning the hazing and objecting to the reinstatement. That statement called the episode unacceptable and urged the school to adopt stronger protections and clearer consequences when students engage in targeted harassment.

In its letter, the Rhode Island Coalition for Israel pressed several pointed questions. It asked who specifically authorized the reinstatement, who benefited from reversing the suspensions, and who was harmed by that choice. The letter further referenced the district handbook, which allows the removal of extracurricular privileges as disciplinary action when allegations are found credible, and requested clarification on why those measures were not applied.

The coalition asked for an immediate meeting at the superintendentโ€™s office and provided contact information for follow-up. It warned that reversing disciplinary consequences sets a โ€œdangerous precedentโ€ and signals that hateful behavior may be tolerated in the future. The letter stressed the rise in antisemitic incidents regionally and nationally as context for urgent action.

School district officials have previously said they were investigating the hazing allegations and had temporarily removed several athletes from team activities while inquiries continued. Local news outlets covering the story reported both the initial ban and the later developments, but as of publication, neither the school district nor Superintendent Bartz had released a detailed public explanation of the reinstatement decision.

Community leaders who oppose the reinstatement say the message sent to students matters. โ€œIf there are no consequences for the students involved, what message does that send to other students who bully, hate, or engage in Jew hatred?โ€ the coalition wrote in the letter, urging mandatory education and training about antisemitism for all high school students.

The Rhode Island Coalition for Israel said it will continue to lead efforts to protect Jewish students and to press for transparent accountability. The group asked the superintendent to contact them via email or by phone to schedule the requested meeting.
