U.S. Support Grows For Resolution Affirming Israel’s Historic Claim To The Temple Mount

Rep. Claudia Tenney introduces a House resolution recognizing the Temple Mount as the holiest site in Judaism, drawing praise from leading American pro-Israel groups.

NEW YORK — Rep. Claudia Tenney introduced a House resolution on October 28 that affirms Israel’s sovereignty over the Temple Mount and recognizes the site as the holiest place in Judaism.

The resolution declares the Temple Mount the holiest site in Judaism. It also calls for the protection of religious freedom and for equal access for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Tenney said the measure reaffirms Israel’s role in safeguarding the site and ensures religious liberty for all who worship there. She noted archaeological and historical evidence of a Jewish connection to the Temple Mount spanning more than 3,000 years.

The measure criticizes current access policies that limit non Muslim entry and prohibit prayer by non Muslims while allowing broader access for Muslim worshippers. The resolution calls those differences double standards and urges measures to guarantee safe and dignified access for Jews and Christians.

Americans for a Safe Israel praised the resolution as timely and correct. Moshe Phillips, chairman of Americans for a Safe Israel, said his group welcomed Rep. Tenney’s action and called out foreign governments that have publicly condemned efforts to allow organized Jewish prayer at the site.

The Zionist Organization of America and other pro-Israel groups expressed support as well. Morton A. Klein, ZOA national president, said the resolution correctly recognizes the Temple Mount’s central place in Jewish history and supports the right of Jews and Christians to worship there.

Supporters say the timing reflects growing concern in the United States over attempts to downplay Jewish claims to Jerusalem and to impose restrictions on Jewish worship at its holiest site. They argue congressional recognition will reinforce U.S. backing for Israel’s sovereignty and religious liberty.

Critics say the resolution could inflame tensions and disrupt the delicate arrangements that have governed the Temple Mount since 1967. Some international and regional voices warned that a formal U.S. congressional affirmation of Israeli sovereignty over the site risks complicating diplomatic efforts and on-the-ground realities in Jerusalem. Observers noted that the proposal was championed by right-wing groups and some hardline commentators.

Tenney’s resolution also reaffirms that Jerusalem is the undivided capital of Israel. It urges protection for the rights of all faiths to access their sacred sites and calls for the enforcement of equal treatment where restrictions currently exist.

Legal and diplomatic experts said congressional resolutions carry political weight but are not binding international law. They said the measure may nonetheless influence policy debates in Washington and among U.S. allies. Supporters counter that declaratory statements such as this one are important moral and political signals that bolster Israel’s position.

For pro-Israel advocates, the resolution is an important affirmation of Jewish heritage and religious rights. It reflects a broader U.S. political movement to acknowledge and defend Israel’s historical and religious claims against efforts to delegitimize them.

The resolution’s progress in the House and any potential votes remain to be seen. Tenney’s office and allied organizations said they will continue briefings and outreach to gain bipartisan support.
