Incident Sparks Concern Among Jewish Organizations
Jewish community groups condemned the attack, describing it as part of a growing pattern of intimidation against Jewish students and pro-Israel advocates. โNo one should fear for their safety while expressing support for Israel or Jewish identity,โ said a spokesperson for Students Supporting Israel.
Bโnai Brith Canada also issued a statement urging law enforcement and universities to take stronger action against violence and harassment targeting Jewish events.
The SSI gathering had been organized as a private educational and cultural event. Witnesses said demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags and chanting anti-Israel slogans forced their way into the space before police intervened.
The incident comes amid a surge of antisemitic acts across Canada since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel, which killed more than 1,200 people and saw over 250 kidnapped into Gaza. Jewish advocacy groups have warned that intimidation and vandalism targeting synagogues, schools, and cultural events have sharply increased.
Toronto Police are continuing their investigation and ask anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-3500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
