YRDSB Parents Urged To File Human Rights Complaints Over Alleged Antisemitic Conduct By Newmarket Parent Council Co-Chair

Concerns mount after comments linked to Shameela Shakeel and the Palestinian Canadian Congress, as Jewish families question whether York Region schools remain safe and inclusive for pro-Israel students.

NEWMARKET โ€“ A York Region District School Board (YRDSB) parent is calling on families and educators to file formal human-rights complaints against Shameela Shakeel, co-chair of the Parent Council at Newmarket High School, alleging that her public remarks and online activity amount to antisemitic discrimination against Jewish and pro-Israel students. The reader says parents at the school have already complained and are now urging others across the board to add their voices.

Allegations Linked To Media Comments And Social Media Posts

The concern focuses on comments attributed to Shakeel in a Newmarket Today article and on posts from the Instagram account of the Palestinian Canadian Congress, where she is involved in leadership. According to the reader, these posts accuse Jewish teenagers who support Israel of โ€œforeign military influence,โ€ language that parents argue stigmatizes minors based on their Jewish identity and Zionist views.

Parents say such rhetoric echoes classic antisemitic tropes about dual loyalty and hidden control, and they warn that it can mark Jewish students as suspect in their own schools. In their view, anyone who advances this narrative should not be in a position of authority over school climate or student welfare.

Concerns About Role In School Governance

Shakeelโ€™s position as co-chair of the Parent Council at Newmarket High School gives her an advisory role in school initiatives and communication between families and administration. Parents who contacted this publication argue that this makes her public statements more than a private matter. They say it directly affects Jewish students who must interact with a council leader they believe views them as agents of a foreign army.

The readerโ€™s message states that โ€œshe has no business having any position of authority in YRDSBโ€ and calls on others to submit complaints through available human-rights and board processes. The goal, they say, is both accountability for specific conduct and a clear signal that targeting Jewish students or Israel-supporting families is unacceptable within York Region schools.

Human Rights Standards And Antisemitism

Ontarioโ€™s Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination in education based on creed, ethnicity, and related grounds, which Jewish organizations emphasize includes protection from antisemitism and anti-Zionist harassment that targets Jews as a group. National Jewish advocacy bodies have repeatedly warned that portraying Jewish students as extensions of the Israeli military, or as agents of a foreign state, can create a poisoned environment in schools and campuses.

Parents who are now mobilizing argue that the board must apply these standards consistently. They say YRDSB cannot claim to value equity while tolerating rhetoric that singles out Jewish teens for suspicion because of their connection to Israel or to relatives who have served in the Israel Defense Forces.

Call For Action By YRDSB

The reader urges YRDSB parents and educators to document any incidents they believe show bias or hostility toward Jewish or pro-Israel students and to use formal complaint mechanisms, including the Human Rights Office and school-level reporting tools. They also call for a review of how Parent Council leaders are vetted, and whether individuals who engage in inflammatory public messaging should continue to hold such roles.

For Jewish and Zionist families in York Region, this case is seen as part of a broader struggle to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for students who express support for Israel, have relatives in Judea and Samaria, or identify proudly as Zionists. Parents stress that disagreement over Middle East politics is legitimate, but that attacking teenagers as โ€œforeign influencedโ€ crosses a clear line into discrimination.

  1. You really should have included the fact that Independent Jewish Voices and myself, Rabbi David Mivasair, joined Shameela Shakil and the Palestinian Canadian Congress in expressing our concerns which led to the Israeli program being cancelled in the Newmarket public school for K-8 students.

    • You have been flagged by Bโ€™nai Brith and other Jewish Organizations . You can call yourself whatever you want but under Jewish law, you are no rabbi. Titles donโ€™t erase the harm caused by spreading lies and targeting Jews and Israel through misinformation and hate.

    • Mr. Mivasair Raot, you’re an enemy of the Jewish people. Whether you were circumsized or born to a Jewish mother does not change this fact. You are the face of evil.

  2. Newmarket houses terror supporters and jihadists who have expressed their desires publicly. My home town was built on Christian values and was always tolerant to other religions.

The spirit of Shameela Shakeel is consistent with political Islam and this spirit should not win in any situation.
