Unapologetically Jewish: Next Steps On Activism And Advocacy

Matthew Taub to outline a grassroots roadmap for confronting antisemitism and strengthening Jewish leadership in Canada.

TORONTO โ€” As Jewish communities across Canada grapple with rising antisemitism and growing polarization, a forthcoming keynote event in Toronto is positioning itself as a practical response focused on leadership, strategy, and action rather than symbolism.

On Thursday, January 29, Matthew Taub, Founder and Executive Director of Unapologetically Jewish, will deliver a keynote address titled Unapologetically Jewish: Next Steps on Activism and Advocacy, followed by a moderated question-and-answer session.

Organizers describe the evening as a candid examination of the current state of Jewish activism in Canada and a call to rethink approaches that many believe have failed to stem the normalization of antisemitism in public life.

According to the event description, Taubโ€™s keynote will focus on identifying gaps in contemporary Jewish advocacy and outlining a framework for moving from reactive responses to proactive leadership. The emphasis, organizers say, is on clarity of purpose, grassroots engagement, and sustained civic participation.

โ€œThis is not a panel discussion and not a fundraising appeal,โ€ the organizers state. โ€œIt is intended as a roadmap for individuals and communities who believe the current moment demands a different level of resolve.โ€

Taub has emerged as a prominent voice within Canadaโ€™s Jewish advocacy landscape, particularly since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel and the subsequent surge in antisemitism targeting Jewish institutions, schools, and community members. His organization, Unapologetically Jewish, advocates for a forthright defense of Jewish identity, Zionism, and democratic values.

The keynote will address what organizers characterize as the shortcomings of legacy approaches to combating antisemitism, including overreliance on statements, symbolic gestures, and institutional caution. Instead, Taub is expected to argue for decentralized leadership, community empowerment, and a willingness to confront extremism directly.

The evening will conclude with an interactive Q&A moderated by Dave Gordon, allowing participants to engage directly with the speaker. Organizers say the moderated format is designed to encourage substantive discussion, including difficult questions and practical problem-solving.

According to the event outline, attendees can expect to gain an assessment of the current antisemitism landscape in Canada, insight into modern advocacy and community defense, and concrete next steps for engagement beyond social media campaigns or public statements.

The event will take place at 7:15 p.m. at a location in the Bathurst and Sheppard area of Toronto, with the exact venue to be announced. Admission is $36 and includes a kosher dinner. Tickets must be purchased by January 22, and seating is limited.

Organizers stress that the event is aimed at those who view silence as a form of acquiescence and who believe Jewish leadership must be exercised openly and confidently in the public sphere.

In recent months, Jewish organizations across Canada have reported increased incidents of antisemitic harassment, vandalism, and intimidation. Community leaders have also raised concerns about the normalization of anti-Jewish rhetoric in activist spaces, on university campuses, and within some civic institutions.

Against that backdrop, the upcoming keynote is being framed as both a reflection on recent failures and a forward-looking effort to redefine Jewish activism in Canada. While the event is explicitly pro-Israel and Zionist in orientation, organizers emphasize that its core focus is civic engagement and the defense of pluralistic democratic values.

โ€œThis event is for people who want more than reassurance,โ€ the organizers state. โ€œIt is for those who want tools, clarity, and the confidence to act.โ€

With limited seating and growing interest, the organizers expect strong attendance from across the Greater Toronto Area. Participants are encouraged to arrive informed and prepared for active engagement.

The message, they say, is straightforward. Jewish life in Canada faces real challenges. Meeting them will require more than reaction. It will require leadership.
